B.C. Waterbirds Abundance Maps
This page contains maps of waterbird abundance based on the BC Coastal Waterbird Survey for 3 BC regions: South Coast, Northern Vancouver Island and North Coast. Data is from 1999-2016 and is separated by Winter (Dec-Feb), Spring (Mar-Apr), and Fall (Sep-Nov). Maps show average densities, abundances, and kernel densities of bird groups during each season. Highest valued areas appear red, and lower value/zero data are in yellow. Survey coverage is generally greatest on the south coast and therefore more data is available at those sites. Coastal areas that are not coloured have not been surveyed. Each map shows abundance for a specific guild, or group of similar waterbirds. For example, data is combined for Rhinoceros Auklet, Cassin's Auklet, Ancient Murrelet, Marbled Murrelet, Pigeon Guillemot, Common Murre and unidentified Alcid for the Alcid group. The species comprising each guild are listed on the maps using standard 4 letter bird codes. Please note that many sites do not have count data for all months and years.
