Forest Bird Surveys Dawson Land Use Planning Region 2012 YT

Project name: WildTrax

Dataset summary : Purpose of the Study: To provide information on habitat associations of migratory forest birds in the Dawson LUP region. Individual Owner: Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment and Climate Change Canada - Wendy Nixon (Project Lead) Article Citation: Leung, M. 2015. Bird – Habitat Associations in and adjacent to the Dawson Land Use Planning Region. Unpublished report, Canadian Wildlife Service, Whitehorse Yukon. Study Area: Dawson Land Use Planning (LUP) region, Yukon, Canada Period of Study: 6 to 16 June 2012, 04:00 - 11:30 General Methodology: Point counts were conducted in selected habitats within the Dawson LUP region. Potential suitable sites (map polygons) were selected based on EOSD habitat classification, then, depending on ease of road/foot access, point counts were conducted within a sub-selection of the polygons. Counts were done at multiple sites (polygons) in each habitat type. Stations were spaced at least 200m apart. A single round of 75m-radius point counts was conducted at each site. Each count was comprised of two, five minute periods to total 10 minutes. During each count, all birds detected by sight or sound within 75 m of the observer were recorded and positioned on a point count mapsheet. Detections were assigned to one of 4 distance bands – 0-25m, 25-50m, 50-75m, >75m. Birds detected in the first interval were re-recorded in the second interval if detected again. All bird observations by Steve Ogle. Information recorded which isn't in WildTrax: For every point count: Temperature, wind, cloud cover, simple vegetation plot For every detection: Quadrant, behaviour/detection type Bounding coordinates of the study area: 63.858 to 65.701 N; 138.064 to 139.701 W decimal degrees. Data was initially standardized for the BAM Version 4 SQL database. This was converted to BAM Version 6 Microsoft Access database in 2020 by updating the table structure. Finally, this data was moved to the WildTrax PostgreSQL database between 2021 to 2022 where it is accessible through the secure WildTrax website. As of 31 March 2022, data uploaded by BAM does not include some metadata. This metadata will become available in the near future following the necessary WildTrax updates. Please contact bamp@ualberta.ca if you require this metadata."
