The purpose of this handbook is to facilitate undertaking breeding bird atlases in North America, to encourage the sharing of information and tools between jurisdictions, and to promote standardization of atlassing methods. The handbook contains information on a range of topics of interest to atlas organizers, including planning an atlas, fundraising, volunteer management, data collection and management, mapping, and publication considerations. It is likely to be of greatest use during the initial planning stages of an atlas project, with each chapter providing a relatively broad overview of the types of decisions and management that each stage of the process requires. Chapters are not exhaustive in detail; rather, they identify key issues and information and direct the reader to additional resources. Chapters begin with an executive summary of key points and a series of "principal recommendations" that were developed with the input of atlas experts and the North American Ornithological Atlas Committee (NORAC). These recommendations are intended to help organizers in the decision-making and planning processes. The handbook includes a list of literature cited and a glossary of terms. It also includes a summary of atlas projects to date (1975 to 2018) in Canada and the United States, including date(s) of atlas projects, websites, and available publications for each province and state. The authors encourage those planning a breeding bird atlas to coordinate with nearby jurisdictions and members of NORAC. Similarly, the authors encourage those jurisdictions that have already completed atlases to continue to share resources, information, and experience with others.

Le présent manuel vise à faciliter la réalisation d'atlas des oiseaux nicheurs en Amérique du Nord, à encourager l'échange de renseignements et d'outils entre les compétences, et à favoriser l'uniformisation des méthodes de production d'atlas. Ce manuel renferme de l'information sur un éventail de sujets qui intéressent les organisateurs d'atlas, entre autres la planification d'un atlas, la collecte de fonds, la gestion des bénévoles, la collecte et la gestion des données, la cartographie et la publication. Il sera vraisemblablement plus utile aux premiers stades de la planification d'un projet d'atlas, chacun de ses chapitres fournissant une vue d'ensemble relativement large des types de décisions et de gestion qui s'imposent à chacune des étapes du processus. Les chapitres ne sont pas exhaustifs; ils cernent plutôt les principales questions et donnent l'information essentielle, puis dirigent le lecteur vers des ressources supplémentaires. Les chapitres commencent par un sommaire des points importants qui sont soulevés et une série de « recommandations principales » qui ont été formulées à partir des commentaires de spécialistes d'atlas et du Comité nord-américain des atlas ornithologiques (CNAAO). Ces recommandations devraient orienter les organisateurs au cours des processus de planification et de prise de décisions. Le présent manuel inclut une liste des ouvrages cités et un glossaire des termes. Il inclut aussi un résumé des projets d'atlas mis en chantier jusqu'à maintenant (1975 à 2018) au Canada et aux États- Unis, et donne entre autres la date de ces projets, ainsi que les sites Web et les 9 publications disponibles pour chacune des provinces et chacun des États. Les auteurs invitent ceux qui planifient la réalisation d'un atlas des oiseaux nicheurs à communiquer avec les compétences avoisinantes et les membres du CNAAO. Ils encouragent de même les compétences qui ont déjà réalisé des atlas à continuer de partager les ressources, l'information et l'expérience avec d'autres.
