Dataset summary : Purpose of the Study: To monitor breeding songbird populations on long-term monitoring sites in order to detect population trends and estimate annual variation. Individual Owner: Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment and Climate Change Canada - Mike Gill (Project Lead) Study Area: Kluane region, southwest Yukon, Canada Period of Study: 8 to 10 June 2001 7 to 14 June 2002 7 to 8 June 2003 12 to 13 Jun 2004 General Methodology: Point counts were conducted on Kluane Ecological Monitoring Program (KEMP) study sites, which are laid out in transect grids. On some sites, the distance between locations along the transects (eg. A1 to A2) is 15 m, on others it's 30m. Point count stations were spaced in order to cover most of the study area but avoid overlapping survey areas (eg. A1, A17, A50...). A single round of 75m-radius point counts was conducted at each site, each year. Each count was comprised of two, five minute periods to total 10 minutes. During each count, all birds detected by sight or sound within 75 m of the observer were recorded and positioned on a point count mapsheet. Detections were assigned to one of 4 distance bands – 0-25m, 25-50m, 50-75m, >75m. Birds detected in the first interval were re-recorded in the second interval if detected again. Data was initially standardized for the BAM Version 4 SQL database. This was converted to BAM Version 6 Microsoft Access database in 2020 by updating the table structure. Finally, this data was moved to the WildTrax PostgreSQL database between 2021 to 2022 where it is accessible through the secure WildTrax website. As of 31 March 2022, data uploaded by BAM does not include some metadata. This metadata will become available in the near future following the necessary WildTrax updates.
