The Cackling Goose closely resembles the related Canada Goose, but in miniature. As it breeds in remote areas of Arctic tundra, most sightings of the Cackling Goose in Canada come on migration when it passes through southern Canada, primarily in the Prairies.

In 2004, the American Ornithologists' Union recognized Cackling Goose as separate from Canada Goose. Cackling Geese nest above the tree line in the Arctic, migrate mostly through the Prairie provinces, and winter mainly in areas of the Central and Mississippi Flyways. Lincoln estimates based on harvest analysis suggest a population of approximately 1.6 million individuals in Canada, and another 200,000 that breed in Alaska and migrate to or through Canada, collectively accounting for 99% of the global population, which represents a very high level of jurisdictional responsibility for Canada. Current abundance represents a large increase relative to the 1970s, and confidence is high because coverage and precision of the Lincoln estimates are both high. The national population of Cackling Goose is within its goal range.
Population trends of Cackling Goose are currently monitored only by Lincoln estimates derived through analysis of harvest data. They show that the population is more than double the size it was in the early 1970s, although it has declined sharply from the higher levels it was at through most of the 1990s and early 2000s.
The goal for Cackling Goose is to remain at or above its recent population level, based on Lincoln estimates from harvest data. Trend data show that Cackling Goose is currently within its goal range

Cackling Goose is reported year-round in Canada, with peaks during spring and fall migration. A drop in observations in the summer months corresponds with its return to its Arctic breeding grounds.
